Decide whether you want a formal or casual party, and plan your decor accordingly. It helps if you have a party theme in mind, such as a dominant color or genre. It helps you keep things consistent and guides all your decisions, from the food to the table settings.

Slow Cooking is a Healthy Way to Cook for Your Family

A slow cooker is an excellent investment for a busy family to make. A long time ago, slow cookers were small and only really suitable for newly married couples (to whom they were often given as wedding presents). Now they come in all shapes and sizes and it is worth taking some time to decide which one will suit you.


Sizes of Slow Cooker


A small slow cooker is around 1.5 litres and these are suitable for couples or single people. A slightly bigger version is available as 3.5 litres. The most popular family size is 6.5 litres and bigger ones are available. They can be round, square or oval in shape.


Oval slow cookers take up less space and the 6.5 litre pot can easily take a medium chicken. It will also suit a family who would like a hot casserole waiting for them when they get home after a long day at work or school.


Healthy and Economical Cooking


The slow cooker is ideally suited to using cheaper cuts of meat because the cooking process is slow and gentle. Meat that would still be chewy after an hour and a half in the oven is tender by the time the slow cooker has finished with it after six hours. It has the flavours of the vegetables added to it and it makes a very tasty and economical meal.


The pot only needs to be about three-quarters full of liquid because the tight-fitting lid retains the moisture needed to cook the food. You can turn the dial to high to start the cooking process and then turn to medium once the pot is heated. The food does not spoil or burn because the heat is so gentle.


Preparation of the Food


To prepare the food for slow cooking, it is recommended to brown the meat first in a frying pan. Softening the vegetables will also enhance the flavour of the finished meal. Remember to add the herbs and spices to the pot and seasoning as required.


Recipes that are able to be adapted to slow cooking methods include bolognaise, chilli, curries, sweet and sour and moussaka. You can also use your slow cooker to make sweet dishes including rice pudding, steamed puddings and jams. There are plenty of recipe books and websites out there with lots of ideas.


Healthy home cooking is easy with a slow cooker. It only takes the time to prepare the vegetables and meat and then set it going and forget about it. Using a slow cooker regularly takes the pressure off the freezer and produces healthy home cooked meals for the whole family to enjoy.

Your endlessly packed days are tolerable for a couple of reasons – there is the bliss of bedtime of course, but shortly before that comes dinnertime with your family. There’s just one little problem about dinnertime – someone has to do the cooking. Those ingredients aren’t going to throw themselves together for a delicious meal all by themselves, now are they? There is something about including mushrooms in your recipes. The most ordinary pedestrian recipes become something worth celebrating. No matter what it is you have in mind – vegetables, chicken, fish or anything, mushrooms somehow say ‘special’ better than any other ready-to-use ingredient. Let’s try cooking mushrooms in this way- a simple recipe that gets a little extra oomph just because the mushrooms decided to show up.

First up on our list of recipes for imaginative ways of cooking mushrooms comes chicken chili with mushrooms. All you need to throw this delicious recipe together are a pound and a half of diced tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, a pound of red kidney beans drained, a pound of fresh mushrooms nicely sliced up, and a a pound of boneless chicken thighs. You will also need a couple of cups of corn and a little chili powder. Now to get dinner together, take out a large sauce pan, throw in the tomatoes, the beans, the mushrooms the chicken and the corn together, stir a couple of cups of water in, and add chili to taste. Once it starts to boil, turn the heat down, cover it up, and allow it to simmer for about 20 minutes. It should cook itself into something delicious while you put your feet up. You can serve it with tortilla chips.

Next up on our list is fish fillets with mushrooms. What you need to start out is a pound of fresh snowy white mushrooms nicely sliced up, a pound of boneless white fish fillets, a cup of couscous, about a pound of marinated artichoke, a cup of fresh tomato sliced up, and a little bit of instant minced onion. Take out a large skillet, throw in the mushrooms, the artichoke with its liquid, a couple cups of water, the couscous, the instant onion, a couple of spoons of salt, and mix it all together. Bring out the fillets, and line them up over the mixture and top it all with tomato chunks. Once it’s started to boil, turn the heat down and keep it covered and let it simmer for about 10 minutes cooking mushrooms and fish alike, until the couscous absorbs all stray liquid. It’s a great healthy meal for the family, and it takes no time.

Let’s check out slow cooking versus cooking exactly the same kind of meals in the oven. The aim here’s not to say what’s best or worse but to merely consider the pros and cons for each. Hopefully, once you are done looking over this article you will know if investing in a slow cooker is worth it to you. Or, if sticking with your trusty old oven will suffice. Here I will check out slow cooking then oven cooking and lastly likely to compare the 2.

Slow cooking is about cooking food at low heat for a long time. After you have the best slow cooker inside your kitchen you will spend 5 to 10 minutes within the mornings to have restaurant quality meals awaiting you at night. The very best slow cooker brands like Hamilton Beach and Crock Pot even have programmable slow cookers that are just like a microwave. What I mean is that all you must do is press go and the slow cooker is smart enough to prepare the food slowly. And when you will be running late the crock pot only will adjust the heat to keep warm. This prevents overcooking and ensures the food is delicious. The primary advantages are that you don’t have to be home when cooking. You can just chuck stuff in and press go. The disadvantage is you will need to wait 8-10 hours for the meal.

Cooking within the oven as well all know is all about cooking and checking. Cooking and checking. Until your meal is prepared. I’m sure you’d agree that while you get time and temperature guidelines on your food packaging they are simply never correct. And this is why oven cooking is much more intensive than slow cooking. Actually, oven cooking also requires some more preparation. Say we’re cooking a roast. Using the oven you need to pre-heat and then grab a pan. Once the oven is heated and the roast is properly prepared with oil etc you are able to chuck it in. You will have to check back soon to check on it and also return to include your sides.

I, personally, prefer slow cooking because I like just chucking stuff in and pressing go. I return and appearance onto it only when I think it may be done. Using the oven you have to watch it carefully cause maybe the oven temp isn’t exact or maybe the directions were wrong. Slow cookers are really suited to busy individuals who want to stay healthy. You may enjoy proper oven meals in fractions from the preparation time. Let’s face it – slow cookers are taking around the globe.

I also love cooking in an oven, don’t misunderstand me, it just feels as though this kind of even when you compare it with slow cooking. A typical crock pot is only and will last a long time. Consider all the awesome meals that may come out of that small energy production.

A good way to save leftover sauces is to store and freeze them in ice cube trays. Then you can reheat them in a sauté pan whenever you need a quick sauce, in just the portion size that you need. This is great for making easy meals during the week.

Keep a food thermometer around. It is always best to stick your meat when cooking when you are not sure if it is done for food safety. Poultry should be cooked to 165 degrees F, Ground Beef, Fish, and Shellfish to 158 F, and Pork to 150.

When you are seasoning meat and fish, make sure you season it evenly. You should always sprinkle the herbs and spices. This will ensure that they do not clump in one area. You want your meat and fish to taste the very same from the first to last bite.

Cooking made easier! Make soup stock in large quantities and put them in freezer safe containers to freeze for next time you need stock. This takes a lot of the work out of making homemade soup! Some people even think broth and sauce tastes better, after it is frozen.

Buy your Thanksgiving turkey fresh not frozen! The frozen birds taste ok but who has the time or energy to thaw one out? A fresh turkey often costs little more than the frozen variety. When you calculate in the time you have to spend just getting it ready to go in the oven it’s just not worth it!

If you like to bake for the holidays and give home-baked gifts from the kitchen, consider packaging your goodies in any of the readily available, multiple-use plastic storage containers instead of holiday print metal tins. The recipient of your tasty treats will not only love their cookies, but will also love the very re-useable container your baked goods came in. Fancy tins are pretty, but often get tossed away because they are rarely air-tight and tend to rust after washing.

Experiment with different breadings for everything from chicken to vegetables to appetizers. To add an extra dimension of flavor to breaded foods, try using coatings other than the usual breadcrumbs or panko. Get creative! Cereals like corn flakes, toasted o’s, and crispy rice work well too. Don’t forget to try crushed crackers and cookies as well.

Be careful when adding oil to a pan in which you are already cooking. If you just pour oil anywhere in the hot pan, it will not only lower the temperature of the food you are cooking, it may also splatter. To avoid this, you should slowly add oil to one spot away from the food.

For a simple way to add interest and complexity to your corn on the cob or dinner rolls, try mixing up a flavored butter. Let your butter come to room temperature or soften in the microwave. Then mix in herbs, spices, or sauces to add an extra burst of flavor. Try BBQ, chipotles, lemon juice, or honey.

As was stated above, everyone cooks for different reasons. However, no matter what reason you may have, it is crucial that you know everything there is to know about cooking. Use this information to improve your cooking skills. Who knows, maybe you will even want to become a chef with this information.

A pumpkin soup recipe might not be the first dish to spring to mind when you are thinking about crock-pot cookery. In fact, since soup takes a relatively short time to cook anyway, you might be wondering why you should consider cooking soup in a crock-pot. There is actually a variety of reasons to dust off your crock-pot and use it for some pumpkin soup recipes.



Three Great Things about Crockpot Soups



First of all, crock-pot cooking is easy. There are literally hundreds of kinds of soups you can make in a slow cooker including bean soup, classic pumpkin soup or a canned pumpkin soup recipe, minestrone soup, curried soup, chicken noodle soup and plenty more.



With a lot of crock-pot soup recipes you simply add the ingredients to the crock-pot, let it cook all day and then puree it in a food processor or blender. You can make extra soup and freeze what you do not want to eat immediately.



If you want to freeze your soup, do not add cream or milk to the recipe. You can add that when you thaw it.



Secondly, a slow cooker brings out the flavors of your food like no other cooking method. Vegetables become juicier and sweeter and all the flavors you add to the soup recipe blend and combine together perfectly.



Another great reason to make soup in a crock-pot is that it is ready when you are. You can add the soup ingredients in the morning, go out all day and the soup will be ready when you get home.



Some slow cookers have programmable warming options so you can set it to cook on low or high for the right number of hours and then to keep your soup warm rather than cook it any more.



If your crock-pot is a more basic model, the great thing about crock-pot cooking is that the cooking time does not have to be exactly to the minute.



If your soup recipe calls for the soup to be cooked for seven hours and you get home after seven and a half or even eight hours, you will not notice the difference in the soup because the heat in the crock-pot is so low.

There are more resources than ever available to recipe lovers everywhere, and new recipes that no one has ever heard of are invented every day. Yet even in the face of all of the new recipes and cooking styles, good old-fashioned recipes still remain the number one favorite of Americans as well as people in other countries, as well. While our cooking tools, implements and ingredients have changed dramatically over the last century (think of the microwave and fat-free ingredients, for instance), the favorite recipes are still those that were cooked up well over a century ago.

Old-fashioned favorite traditional meals still make up the majority of the meals that are cooked for families across the United States and other nations around the world. While the way we cook may have changed, the food that we eat really hasn’t. Thankfully, many new healthy ingredients taste much the same as our traditional less healthy counterparts, so most people won’t notice much of a difference. But just to be safe, it is probably better not to mention to the most traditional diners that you went out of your way to make their meal a little healthy. In my ‘un-biased’ opinion, the crockpot / slow cooker is one of the most
convenient and easy to use appliances in my kitchen. The time savings
features of the slow cooker and the delicious dinners that have resulted
more than offset any minor drawbacks.

Before I list my top reasons why the crockpot is the most useful appliance
in any kitchen, I will list a few of the areas where it does not perform
as well.

- Large cuts of meat such as boneless prime rib or leg of lamb are still
best when oven roasted.

- Except for stews and chowders, the slow cooker does not cook fish very
well.

- The slow cooker collects a lot of the juices since the steam does not
escape during cooking and these juices can become diluted and watery,
which can affect the flavoring of the food.

- If not careful, a slow cooker can overcook food -especially some of
the more tender meats and poultry.

These drawbacks are relatively minor compared to the positives which
I will list now.

- The slow cooker needs virtually no tending while it cooks, freeing you
up to do other chores or recipes.

- The slow cooker will tenderize less expensive, tough cuts of meat and
make great stews out of them.

- The slow cooker allows you to be out of the kitchen for extended periods
of time -sometimes even all day.

- Burning your food is rarely a problem. The slow cooker will make many
dishes for you better than any other appliance -especially those that tend
to stick to the bottom of a pan.

In my opinion the slow cooker is one of the most under-utilized and yet
superior of kitchen appliances. When used for what it does best, you will
find that you are able to prepare great dishes in less time than you though
possible!
