The Most Beneficial Vegetarian Dinners to Cook Your Family

Article by Tammy Boaz

Every family can benefit from increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables in their diet. Even if you are not vegetarians, consider cooking a couple of “meat free” meals each week. People who follow a vegetarian diet tend to have lower cholesterol, stronger immune systems and are more likely to maintain a healthy body weight.

Here are some tips to help you make the switch:

Start with a “family favourite” recipe, such as lasagna or bolognese, and modify the recipe for a meat free version. Remember, you don´t have to make the meal solely from vegetables. Use one of the many soya-based meat equivalents.

If you find the thought of cooking a vegetarian meal from scratch a little daunting, buy a couple of supermarket ready meals first. Most stores offer a great choice of dishes and it should be easy to find one that appeals to the family’s acute taste.

Buy a cheap vegetarian cookbook or download recipe ideas from the internet. There is a wealth of information out there, so there are no excuses for serving limp salads!

When eating out, try to switch to a vegetarian option. Even the fast food chains offer vegeburgers and bean burritos, so making the switch is easy. Just make sure that you go easy on the side orders. French Fries might be made of potato but they are still loaded with fat!

If you find the taste of some vegetarian meals a little bland, use herbs, spices and seasoning to add taste and flavor. Think of all the recipes that your family enjoys and eats anyway. Chances are that there are quite a few vegetarian meals in the list! Tomato soup, bean salad, coleslaw, macaroni cheese..it should be easy to put together a vegetarian menu a couple of times a week.

Go easy on the higher fat foods such as cheese. It is still possible to gain weight on a vegetarian diet if you eat the wrong foods in large portion sizes. Remember to check that any cheese you buy is vegetarian, as some cheeses are made from animal rennet. Increase your consumption of beans and pulses in tasty stews and casseroles. Legumes are a good source of protein.

If you don´t think you can miss meat out of your recipes altogether, try giving up red meat instead. Switch to chicken or turkey mince in pasta sauces and burgers, as the fat content is considerable lower.

Most cooking styles will have a wealth of vegetarian options available, meaning you can have an extensive and varied repertoire of family meals. Italian pasta sauces, stir fry recipes, mexican food, curries.. the choice is endless.

Many vegetarian dishes can be easily cooked in your slow cooker. Vegetable stew, Winter Vegetable Casseroles, soups and curries. Save time, effort and calories with these healthy choices.

Try making the switch and see if your family can tell the difference. The first time I made lasagna to the usual recipe, but with soya mince, no-one around the table even noticed. And if your family enjoys the meals so much that you decide to make a lifestyle change, remember that you will have to start checking the ingredients on every food item that you buy. Read the nutritional labels of every product carefully, as animal products do turn up in the strangest places!

How To Become A Great Cook In No Time!

How To Become A Great Cook In No Time!

Article by Jerry Pohn

Many people do not realize how fun and exciting cooking really can be. The information provided below will give you an idea for simple approaches to cooking that can make your palate dance with delight. You do not have to be a chef to make outstanding meals that you will enjoy.

Herbs and spices are your cooking friends. You can do almost anything in the kitchen with the use of the right combination of spices. You should educate yourself, and learn which spices, or herbs, taste best with which meats, or vegetables. The possibilities for your best meals will be limitless.

Try plunging your veggies in a container of ice water right after you blanch them so that they do not become pale and unattractive. The ice water will allow them to settle without losing their appetizing, bright colors. This is especially important when serving food at functions where pleasing aesthetics at the table are a primary goal.

Avoid cooking soggy rice. When you are cooking rice, place a folded towel between the lid and the pot. When the rice steams, the moisture it creates will be absorbed by the towel and won’t drip back into the rice. Cook the rice for the recommended amount of time, and you will have perfect rice every time!

To easily remove the veins from shrimp use the sharpest knife that you have and slit down the back of the shrimp where the vein is. Place the knife at the top of the vein once slit and lift it out then rinse the rest out of your shrimp with cold water.

One very simple yet effective way to cook new and interesting foods is to simply change the spices and sauces that you use. Adding new spices or finding other sauces to marinate with can result in drastically different tastes. An often overlooked and easy way to get some interesting spices and sauces is to shop at foreign food stores in your area.

Don’t let extra eggroll and wonton wrappers go to waste! They are great for making simple homemade baked chips. Cut the wrappers into chip size shapes and place on a greased cookie sheet. Spray the wrappers lightly with cooking spray or oil. Top with your favorite flavoring such as savory garlic salt, or sweet cinnamon sugar, and bake until crisp.

If you realize that you have made too much sauce, you can take any excess sauce and put it in the freezer in an ice tray. This is very convenient because the next time that you need sauce for something you can pop a few cubes in the pan instead of making a sauce.

Save your carrot peelings, the ends of onions, parmesan rinds, and celery leaves in a container in your freezer. The next time you roast a turkey, a chicken, or bone-in beef, place the bones or carcass into a stock pot with your frozen veggie parts and cover with enough water to cover it all. Let this simmer as long as you can stand it (up to 8 hours) for a rich, flavorful stock that you can use in recipes or as a base for soup.

When you are seasoning meat and fish, make sure you season it evenly. You should always sprinkle the herbs and spices. This will ensure that they do not clump in one area. You want your meat and fish to taste the very same from the first to last bite.

The tips that have been given in the above article should have helped you to realize that anyone can cook if they put their mind to it. There is no reason to make any excuses when it comes to cooking. If you fail at one dish, there is always another waiting to be cooked.

Hey y’all! Aunt Peggy and I are making dishes for our Holiday dinner every week in December, and this week we made the main course, a delicious Beef Tenderloin. I got such raves for it last year that I had no choice but to make it again. Not that I mind, this is a beautiful piece of meat. Earlier this week I promised to reveal the secret ingredient that will make your Beef Tenderloin explode with flavor! Here it is: bacon grease. I congeal bacon fat and rub it all over the Tenderloin. Just a little bit to add some flavor and fat to the meat. It tastes so good! Whatever main dish you are cookin’, be sure to watch that oven so you don’t burn the dish. Overcooking meat and poultry is a very easy thing to do, and no one likes a dried out dish. If you need any recipe help, go on in to the Paula Deen Forums on GetCookin.PaulaDeen.com, there are loads of nice people that will help you get through the meal! Love and Best Dishes, Paula

How and How Much to Cook in a BBQ

Article by Bruno Negreiros

To measure the right amount of Steak that will be needed at a BBQ, one need two basic information: the type of meat and the menu served on one side and the number of people – men, women and children – guests.
An average gross can be made as follows: for each 300 to 500g to 350g and 200 men for every woman.
We use these measures for all types of barbecue, except those in which there is excessive amount of bone (eg when using the rib).
Meats like steak, sirloin, beef sirloin are expensive and can be mixed with cheaper meats like prime rib, titty and void, served with a good follow-up, make any barbecue a success!
If you do not want to miss at least 500g is a far right person, and also includes a small surplus. For a barbeque rib only, however, this rule underscores the need to purchase. The 5kg each rib, took one kilogram of fat, pelanca, tallow and 2 kg are bones. That leaves 2kg of meat, or 200g per person. Hunger for sure!
We must take into account also that the accompanying pain only bread or a salad of lettuce, tomato and onion, meat goes missing in the account of the rib above. Now, if the monitoring is a good variety of salads, bread, polenta, potato salad and mayonnaise, 200g are almost sufficient.
One technique that can also be used in case of doubt is to prepare an extra skewer of pork or drumstick or thigh of the chicken wing.
It is important to realize that large barbecues for more than 100 people for example, require a new calculation, since in these situations there is much waste and too much waste, necessitating a greater amount of meat per person.
It should also be aware of the variables: women eat less than men, children eat more than nibble at lunch eat more than dinner, older people eat less, only a group of men generally eat more meat on the bone, as ribs, fish and poultry are lighter and therefore can be consumed more, consumed more in winter than in summer, the beach and on the website if you eat more than in the city, eat more in an informal barbecue, meat too fat on most, if the grill takes a lot to get done, people often lose their hunger, if the guests tamp of cheeses, salami, olives, caipirinhas, beer will eat less and, last but not least: a climate of High spirits consumption increases!

How To Cook a Tuna Steak Recipe

Article by Jake Anders

Tuna steaks mainly comprise of firm meaty flesh which has a distinct flakiness to it. The firmness of the flesh enables the steaks to withstand the more aggressive cooking methods such as roasting, broiling, sautéing and grilling. The fact that the steaks cook very quickly is important seeing as it tends to become dry when cooked past medium rare. It also has a relatively high fat content which results in a strong rich flavor in the steaks as well.

Mainly sold as steaks, tuna tends to dry out rather fast, and should therefore be cooked briefly over high heat. For great tasting steaks, marinate before you simmer them in a sauce. The fish easily takes on flavors from marinades. Good choices for marinade ingredients include combined soy sauce, garlic, sugar, lemon juice, fresh herbs and some olive oil.

Tuna steaks come from the loins cut of tuna fish which tend to have low or moderate quantities of fat, seeing as the fattier cuts of tuna are normally reserved for sushi. There are various types of tuna species used for steaks which include the highly prized blue fin tuna, skipjack, yellow fin tuna and the albacore. The Bonito is more of a cross between tuna and mackerel which is also highly sought after.

They may be cooked using various preparation methods. You may grill, sear, barbecue or pan fry your tuna steaks for up to two minutes on each side. Alternatively, you could wrap the tuna steaks in some oiled foil and bake for 10-15 minutes, or even braise for 10-15 minutes. You may want to use thick steaks of at least 1 inch thick as these will prove harder to overcook. Watch your tuna steaks carefully even after removing them from heat as they tend to cook thereafter. Once you try seared tuna you will become an avid fan of this fish.

Preparations of the chicken vary depending on the state that the chicken is in. Chicken that has been frozen cannot be prepared in a similar way with that one that has just been slaughtered. Frozen chicken will have to be thawed first under some cool running water for a number of hours or just transfer the chicken from the freezer to the lower parts of the refrigerator so that it thaws slowly over a period of 24 hours. When you are ready to embark on the cooking part, remove the now thawed out chicken from the fridge or under the running water and place it on the sink. The oven should by now be attaining 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Get rid of any wrappings that may be on the chicken and then remove the heart, neck and other organs that may be in the cavity of the chicken.

Wash the chicken thoroughly under running water and then pat it dry with some paper towels. Take a plate and place the clean chicken on it and then clean up your hands and the surface that you have been working on with some soap and water. The chicken is then rubbed with some 2 to 3 tablespoons of olive oil and any of the following seasoning combinations: lemon pepper seasoning and salt; salt, paprika and pepper; poultry seasoning and black pepper; rosemary and tarragon; oregano, garlic and basil; or any other seasoning blend that you like. Take a roasting pan and place the chicken on it ensuring that the breast side is down. Bake the chicken in the oven for some 60 minutes at 350 degrees. Remove it from the oven and place it the other side up and continue with the baking process for ? an hour or more. This will ensure that the breast remains tender and moist. In order to be sure that the meat is well cooked, we use an internal meat thermometer that has to clock 165 degrees at the breasts deepest part.

How to Cook Red Beans

How to Cook Red Beans

Article by Musarrat Sheikh

Red kidney beans are also known as the common beans. The red kidney beans are also very nutritious like is the case with most beans. These beans are especially rich in fiber content which is ideal for people suffering from diabetics as it tends to lower their sugar levels from dangerously high levels to more manageable thresholds. They also contain significant levels of manganese and proteins which are important in the human body apart from fiber. The red kidney beans also have iron, potassium, thiamine, selenium, vitamin B6, calcium, folic acid, starch and dietary fiber. When combined with some whole grains, these beans form a diet that is free of fat for those who watch what they eat. Read on and find out how to cook red beans.

Before you actually embark on preparing any type of beans, you’ll have to soak them first in water. The act of soaking the red kidney beans in water serves two purposes which are breaking down the poisonous compound known as lectin phytohaemagglutinin which is also found in other species of beans although it is highly concentrated in red kidney beans as well as softening them a little bit. The lectin compound causes severe gastric upsets if the beans are not soaked. If you intend to use a Crockpot to prepare the beans, avoid it as it has low temperature levels which are not enough to neutralize the lectin phytohaemagglutinin compound. This is significant as concerns any recipe that might have the red kidney beans among the ingredients. Beans are an integral part of our diets although they should be consumed in modest quantities as they have been found to contain purines. The substance purine causes gout, high uric acid levels as well as kidney stones when consumed in large servings.

The ingredients that you will require to make slow cooked herbed red kidney beans include: 1 cup of red kidney beans that have been in water for an hour, 10 pieces of chorizo sliced thinly, 1 green bell pepper sliced, 2 white onions that have been peeled and sliced, 3 cups of water, 6 garlic cloves peeled and chopped, 2 crushed bay leaves, ? cup celery, 1 teaspoon of dried thyme, 1 teaspoon paprika, 1 teaspoon ground pepper, 1 teaspoon of salt, ? cup chopped green onions, 3 cups of ready white rice.

Into the slow cooker or pot, place all your ingredients except the green onions and the white rice. Set the cooker into high heat and proceed to cook the beans for approximately 4 hours. After this period elapses, set the cooker settings to low and cook the beans for an extra one hour. Serve the beans with the white rice and top them up with green onions. Apart from this recipe, there are other recipe ideas that you can adopt to prepare the red kidney beans. This can serve 4 or 5 people.
