Crockpot Pork Roast With Onions and Potatoes Meal

For all the busy cooks out there, here are a couple of recipes to help you put dinner on the table quickly, easily, and economically.  With a crockpot entree of meat and potatoes, add a make-ahead green bean salad and you are ready to feed your family a nutritious dinner in no time at all.

PORK ROAST WITH ONIONS AND POTATOES

This recipe requires a 4-quart slowcooker for best results.

Approximately 3 lb boneless pork loin roast, trim off fat

1 large garlic clove, sliced

5 medium potatoes, washed, cubed, unpeeled

1 large onion, sliced

3/4 cup water (or tomato juice, if desired)

1 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce

1 tbsp cornstarch

1 tbsp cold water

Make slits in roast in insert slices of garlic.  Place roast under broiler to brown.  Put potatoes in slow cooker.  Add 1/2 the onion slices.  Place roast atop vegetables and cover with remaining onions.  Combine water or juice with soy sauce and pour over roast.  Place lid on slowcooker and cook on low about 8 hours.  When ready to serve, remove roast and vegetables from cooker.  Combine cornstarch and cold water.  Add to the liquid in the slow cooker.  Turn cooker to high until liquid is thickened.  Slice meat and serve thickened liquid over the meat and vegetables.

This recipe has a few more protein grams than carbs so it is excellent for diabetics who want to enjoy some good old “meat and potatoes”.

GREEN BEAN SALAD

2 cans French-style green beans, drained

1 small can of peas, drained

4 celery sticks, diced

1/2 medium bell pepper, diced

1 onion, diced

1small jar pimento

Dressing:

1 1/2 cup Splenda

1 cup cider vinegar

1 tsp salt

1/2 cup olive oil

1 tbsp water

In a medium mixing bowl, combine all the vegetables together.

To make the dressing, in a seperate mixing bowl combine, all the dressing ingredients together.  Pour dressing over vegetables, toss to mix well and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.  One and a half hour before serving, drain vegetables.  Note:  This is a great dish to make ahead for convenience later.

 Enjoy!

Why Do Kids Get Chocolate Coins on Religious Holidays?

by osde8info

Why Do Kids Get Chocolate Coins on Religious Holidays?

You may have seen chocolate coins in bright gold and silver colored wrappers in the stores around mid-winter. Unless you’re Jewish, you might not have known what these coins were for. While they’re simply a tasty treat for the rest of us, these coins are a part of the Hanukkah celebration for Jews – they’re called gelt, which is Yiddish for money.

Gelt is often given out to children to help them enjoy the holiday. Sometimes the gelt is in the form of real coins – the equivalent of stocking stuffers – and larger gifts of money from grandparents. Gelt given in Israel is called dmei Hanukkah. In addition, those who visit Hasidic Rebbes during the season may receive coins, as a blessing. However, there’s also chocolate gelt.

Modern chocolate gelt can look like current coins or like antique ones. Each gold or silver wrapper is stamped to look like a coin, complete with a face side, tail side and writing. The chocolate beneath is similarly stamped. Little bags of these confections can be easily found in drug stores, grocery stores, high end chocolatiers and other places where delicious chocolate is sold. Of course, the price of the gelt will reflect the quality of the chocolate inside.

Gelt in the form of chocolate coins is a mostly twentieth century innovation. It makes a fun gift for children, and can be used instead of real money in dreidel games. Playing with a dreidel is a big part of the Hanukkah celebration for Jewish children, since it commemorates a period where Jews were not allowed to study Torah by the Romans. To hide the fact that they were really engaging in forbidden religious practices, playing dreidel games arose. Roman soldiers who encountered someone playing these games assumed that they were gambling, not studying.

A dreidel, called a sevivon in Hebrew, is a spinning top with four sides. Children play with it for Hanukkah, and each side has a Hebrew letter imprinted on it. These letters are an acronym for a Hebrew phrase meaning “A great miracle occurred there”. This refers to the miracle of the oil that Hanukkah celebrates.

After the lighting of the menorah, it’s appropriate to play the dreidel game. Each child starts out with ten or fifteen coins, which may be real, or can be made of chocolate. The players spin the dreidel, and depending on which side the top falls on, they either win markers from the pot or have to give up some of their coins. There’s more than one way to play the game, and many games keep going until one player has all the chocolate coins.

Chocolate coins are a tradition dating back many centuries. They were enjoyed back then and are equally enjoyed as much today. They are always a treat and even more exciting since they are reserved for the rare special occasions. Chocolate coins are something everyone remembers getting as a child well into their adulthood and then giving them to their own kids.

Chocolate! (it’s so Funny)

Chocolate! (it’s so Funny)

Ever wondered what life would be like without chocolate. I’m sure if you’re a chocolate lover like me, such a concept would be unthinkable. Who would dare suggest such a thing. Ok, it was just a thought, in a moment of madness. Well actually, it was more than just a moment, during which time, I wore the shoes of a slightly disturbed chocoholic (only slightly), and probably for slightly longer than I should have. While wearing those shoes, I had these thoughts. Please don’t quote me on them:

In the beginning, there was the word…and the word was Xocalati

There are three important things in life: Love, chocolate,…and..er…and remembering to buy chocolate.

Last week, I saw a swimming pool full of chocolate liquor; and as usual, I had to go and put my foot in it… (well to be honest, it was both feet).

We were the first to build a house completely from chocolate. Two months later, here we are; homeless, (but not hungry).

If chocolates and flowers are the way to a girl’s heart, then why the hell do they not make chocolate flowers?

Two chocolate chips were sitting on a freshly baked cookie. One looked up at the sky and said, “it’s nice here, isn’t it?” The other replied, “no, I’d much rather be in a bar.”

Susan asked Mary, “so what would you do if I took all that chocolate away?” Mary replied, “so what would you do if you had to carry all that chocolate, without any legs?”

“At the end of the day, people are all the same, we all want and need the same things, don’t we?” “Huh… speak for yourself dude!”

I had a ‘near death’ experience, and I saw the light, and the light was leading me into a shiny brown, and the shiny brown was surrounded by, what looked like almonds.

Money is everything. You can’t get chocolate without it.

“I just don’t know what you see in that man, after all, he’s just a candy store worker.”

Obviously, the person that said, “music is the food of life,” never tasted it.

I have become an optimist. The larder isn’t half empty, It just has more space for…chocolate… things….

They say that chocolate gives you a boost of energy. I bought all this chocolate because I’m planning to run a marathon. Sometime soon… Honestly…

“I would run a million miles just to be by your side… The chocolate side of course, not the wafer side.”

“You asked me where I expected to be in three years time. But before I answer the question, I must first ask, “where will the chocolate be?”

“So what if I do have a chip on my shoulder? You should see what I have in my pockets.”

“My son, friends will come, friends will go. But chocolate doesn’t have legs.”

In the cold light of day, chocolate tastes just right.

If you were in my shoes, you’d have very sticky feet.

If faith really can move a mountain, then why couldn’t she carry a bigger box of chocolates when she visited yesterday?

Tomorrow’s another day. “Oh dear, back to the shops again.”

Who would have thought that chocolate could become so popular, without being featured on a reality TV show.

Well, now you have heard my thoughts. If I have anymore I will let you know. Stay sweet, my chocolate love, and one day we will melt into one; and you can have my nuts.

Elegant Antique Tea Sets and Ceramic Tea Pots to Serve Tea

Elegant Antique Tea Sets and Ceramic Tea Pots to Serve Tea

Tea, for years has always been an exotic drink to refresh the mind and body after a hard day’s work or whenever you feel like you want to relax your mind and gather a bit of energy and regain your spirits, tea is the most popular beverage in the world after water; it is also known to detoxify poison and has been used as a medicine. With the origin of tea the art of serving it properly has always been of utmost importance which on one hand makes you feel more refreshing and on the other hand captures the flavor and smell of the brew for a much longer time. In many countries, tea has been merely a drink that you can make in any old mug and serve it simply. The proper setting to enjoy the tea is by setting a pretty table that your guests can enjoy include china cups and saucers if possible. Tea always comes from a pot, brought to the table on a tray along with sugar, a sugar holder, a milk pitcher, tongs for sugar cubes, a napkin, a spoon, a saucer, and – of course – a cup.

The Tetsubin teapot is a Japanese antique tea set made from cast iron. The Tetsubin teapot is a beautiful reflection of the Japanese culture and history. A typical Tetsubin teapot has a geometric, organic or animal pattern decoration on the side where its spout faces your right. This is because the pot is held in the left hand in Chanoyu, the Japanese tea ceremony. Its design is thought to have been influenced by the kettles of the common Japanese households of the 17th and 18th centuries. These kettles were simple in design and undecorated. They were typically hung on the fireplace hearth to provide hot water, warmth and humidity to a household; they were extremely practical pieces of kitchenware.

A ceramic teapot is a charming addition to any kitchen. While the appearance of a ceramic teapot may look simple, the actual work into the design can be quite elaborate but not with loud decorations. The teapot should also not be too delicate for use, or too heavy to lift. The structure of a ceramic teapot is a precise art in balance, both in its structure and its appearance.

A ceramic teapot should ideally be well-balanced, with the body of the ceramic teapot should not be too tall or wide. The bottom should allow the ceramic teapot to sit in a stable position. A spout must be long enough and angled correctly to ensure that does not dribble when tea is poured and has a lid that fits firmly in its hole, even when being poured. The teapot should also not be too delicate for use, or too heavy to lift. The handle of a ceramic teapot should be strong and ergonomically designed. The handle should be designed as thus to allow the handle to support the weight of both the tea and body when the ceramic teapot is in the pouring position.

A ceramic teapot should be able to pour tea in an elegant and graceful manner. Its appearance should also reflect its elegance. The walls of the ceramic teapot body should also be balanced. Thin walls will break, while thick walls will add unnecessary weight to the pot.

Antique tea sets and teapots are typically very expensive, so you have to have prepared to spend some handsome money. Of course, it is possible to buy antique or collectible tea items at wholesale prices, but the trick is knowing where and how to look for. Some people think that eBay is the actual online auctions for good pricing of antique tea seta and tea pots. You have to do a long research work where to get the antique sets and collectible tea items at a much reasonable rate so it will be really nice and you can get lots of items you want to collect. Also while buying things online you’ve got to choose the items from the category very carefully cause these antique items are for the very precious tea refreshing your mornings and afternoons.

Kate Prescott is a professional cook and likes to experiment on various cuisines, recipe and refreshment drinks. She has been engaged doing research on antique tea sets and loose tea leaf that adds flavor to different connoisseur and contributes to maintain sound health conditions.

The Slow Cooking Process

The Slow Cooking Process

The slow cooking process cultivates the most fabulous meals cooked in an efficient and conventionally traditional way. The number of slow cooker recipe books available is an indication of the popularity that slow cooking has brought to the kitchen at home. It seems as if it was only yesterday when at home as a youngster I enjoyed the delicious and hearty home cooking of my Mother.

The range of foods which a slow cooker or Crock Pot as it is also know can produce, with the many recipe books available, are in their thousands. Generally, the slow cocker recipe book Author communicates the natural and holistic style of the cooking process which often allows dishes to culminate in to works of culinary art.

The slow cooking process uses a low heat to cook food over a long period of time thus allowing the flavours to infuse the ingredients such as the more tough cuts of meat, offering a point of tenderness and succulence. Beef stews, Irish stews, Curries, pastas, Goulash to name but a few dishes perform with great confidence in a slow cooker.

So who are the Authors behind this Crock pot idea? Well Judith Finlayson as well as Natalie Haughton are two of my favourite, offering straight forward, styles of slow cooking processes through their slow cooker recipe books. Even though I have been using this cooking implement for a while it does not cease to amaze me how brilliant the whole experience can become. Really does a day go by when I’m not using the slow cooker for a lunch preparation or breakfast for the next day? Due to the low heat cooking temperature you can actually prepare meals hours in advance, leaving for work in the morning you can actually create a masterpiece which will be ready on your return home, early evening.

I mentioned that the range of the slow cooker recipe book is extensive, however, it pays great dividends to familiarise yourself with some of the many styles of cooking out there. Although the process in principle is the same, the use of the combined ingredients in a particular way will produce some fantastic results. The slow cooker or the crock pot have been around for a while, making a big impact in the 1970s, while today the range and sophistication of the models in the market place really have come on leaps and bounds.

So happy cooking, even happier slow cooking it really is a great amount of fun which takes away the stresses of food preparation and encourages wholesome homely cooking. Read widely as the slow cooker recipe book in its entire concept will lead to wonderful recipes and culinary delights.

Come and check out fabulous slow cooker recipes today.
